Dwayne’s World – June 2024
Dwayne’s World
A Season of Celebration
As I noted last year, June is typically the month when things start to slow down, and summer is enticingly near. This is not true for all VPSEM teams, of course – and now that the Office of Convocation has joined the portfolio, June will never be a “quiet” month for VPSEM again. While the added work of convocation increased the June tempo, it’s been wonderful to see this cohort of graduates cross the stage. Many of the students, as members of the pandemic class of 2020, did not have a high school graduation ceremony and began their postsecondary education during a time of remote learning and other disruptions related to the containment of COVID-19. This imbued the spring ceremonies with an even greater sense of importance.
A Team Effort
The small but mighty Convocation team was tasked with coordinating 34 ceremonies over a three-week period, for over 13,000 participating graduands (16,000 students in total are graduating this spring). I’d like to congratulate them on a job exceptionally well done. I would also like to thank the over 30 VPSEM staff who volunteered their time to assist with convocation duties.
Summer State of Mind
Last year I also reminisced about some of the beach and water-based associations I had with summers of my youth – given the current state of 172 St. George, however, I’ll refrain from any further references to water…
With the Canada Day weekend fast approaching, my summer playlist is ready to go, with Cruel Summer (Bananarama) and Summer of ‘69 (Bryan Adams) (and a whack more ‘80s music) in heavy rotation. I hope that everyone has a restful summer with plenty of opportunities for downtime.
