A New Year and a New Provost

Cheryl Regehr

After ten years as Vice-President and Provost of the University, Cheryl Regehr’s term comes to an end on December 31. Provost Regehr’s accomplishments during this time are many. In recent reflections on her tenure, Provost Regehr shared that some highlights have included an increased focus on teaching excellence, including the introduction of professional ranks for teaching stream faculty; the redesign of student mental health services; and efforts to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion programs, such as the institution of a special fund to hire Black and Indigenous faculty members, and a marked increase in the number of access and outreach programs at the University from 30 to 135 in only five years.

Succeeding Provost Regehr in this role is Trevor Young, who has served as Dean of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine since 2015, and as Vice-Provost, Relations with Health-Care Institutions. In the announcement of his appointment, Professor Young identified early priorities as continuing to advance student mental health and accessibility initiatives, focusing on approaches to AI in teaching and research, and exploring ways for the three campuses to improve their working relationships even further.
